Marine & Offshore

Bronze and cast iron marine valves, storm valves, strainers and hydrant valves for shipboard and offshore service

Marine and offshore service demands valves that withstand seawater and salt atmosphere and conform to the shipbuilding standard specified for the vessel. This selection covers JIS and DIN pattern marine valves, storm valves, sea chest and marine strainers, and hydrant valves. Classification society approval is confirmed against the item and the vessel's requirements at quotation.

Classification and type approval

Most shipboard valves on class-regulated vessels require type approval from the classification society specified in the build contract. Type approval confirms that the valve design has been independently tested against the relevant standard, typically for pressure integrity, shutoff performance and material traceability. Where class notation requires it, individual valves may also require a works certificate (3.1 or 3.2) or witnessed testing.

Classification society type approval is confirmed against the item and the vessel's requirements at quotation. Include the classification society and notation in your RFQ.

JIS-standard valves

Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS) flanged valves are specified on most vessels built to Japanese or Korean yard practice, and on many European-built vessels where the owner specifies a Japanese registry. JIS B2301 and B2302 define dimensions and pressure ratings (JIS 5K, 10K, 16K) that differ from EN 1092-1 and ASME B16.5, so mixing standards on a single system requires care with flange compatibility.

Our JIS range includes gate, globe and storm valves in cast iron and bronze, across JIS 5K, 10K and 16K ratings.

Quick-closing and safety valves

International Maritime Organisation (IMO) regulations require quick-closing valves on fuel oil tank outlets and certain other service tanks in machinery spaces. These valves must be operable from outside the space, typically via a mechanical wire release or pneumatic actuation, allowing the tank to be isolated rapidly in a fire or flooding event.

Storm valves, chest valves and mud boxes serve the sea chest and overboard connections: storm valves prevent ingress when the ship rolls and the connection is submerged; chest valves provide the primary sea-suction shutoff inside the ship.

Material selection for seawater service

Bronze CC491K (gunmetal) is the standard body material for seawater-wetted valves in marine service. Its tin-copper-zinc alloy composition resists dezincification and biofouling in both salt and brackish water. Cast iron and ductile iron are acceptable for internal freshwater and low-corrosion service but should not be used on seawater-wetted lines without appropriate coating or cathodic protection.

Applicable standards

  • Built to the applicable JIS and marine shipbuilding standards for the valve type. Classification society approval is confirmed against the item at quotation.

Typical pressure range: JIS 5K (PN5) to JIS 16K (PN16); PN10 to PN16 for EN-flanged marine valves
